Description

Luca Roagna's Langhe Rosso is probably the most subtle wine in all of Piedmont. Although the label bears the title Langhe Rosso, this is a declassified Barolo. In Roagna, “young vine” means under 25 years old. The grapes come from two vineyards: Lots of limestone in the marl soil. The finesse of Burgundy, the climate of Piedmont. The bouquet alone is wonderfully complex and full of finesse. Some tar, intense limestone, hints of rusty iron, sour cherries and coleslaw, black fruits and dried rose petals. The mouthfeel is clean, bright, fine to the touch, rich in tannins and wonderfully fine. Medium bodied, charming and full of finesse, with orange peel and citrus aromas. It's worth tasting this wine - it's an open secret why this Lange Rosso is always booked out quickly.

Luca Roagna runs the organic business today. The family put down roots in Barbaresco many centuries ago, even before Barbaresco and Barolo wines had their current characteristics. They own 20 hectares of land, 2 of which are vineyards, the rest of the land is used for forests. The vines are in the best locations in the Barbaresco and Barolo areas and are up to 100 years old.

Sustainability is not just an empty phrase for the Roagnas, but is lived here. The family has adopted a strict 10-point manifesto according to which they run the business. Old vines, massale selection, biodiversity, physiological ripeness, pied de cuve with our own yeasts, long maturation in traditional wooden barrels, little sulfur - no filtration and clarification, long maceration on the skins, craftsmanship, clear aromas without the influence of wood, these are the guiding principles which they make their wines. Everything here should be alive, which is why they look after the beneficial insects. Insects, beetles, caterpillars and of course bees are welcome residents of the vines and naturally help.

When harvesting by hand, a strict selection of physiologically ripe grapes is carried out, vineyard by vineyard. There is now space in the newly designed cellar to develop the individual layers separately. This is done in large wooden barrels instead of barriques. Once the wine is separated from the skins, it continues to age in large round cement tanks. As a result, the wines require significantly more time to open. The elegant Roagna wines are true late bloomers. They are also rare and very sought after. In addition to some Barolo, the focus is clearly on Barbaresco. The Langhe Bianco is a cuvée made from Chardonnay with white-pressed Nebbiolo and is also well worth trying. All Roagna wines age fantastically and reward the patient connoisseur with incredible enjoyment. So treat yourself and your cellar to a few bottles of these authentic drops! We are sure you won't regret it.
